When it comes to type 4 hair, there’s always a battle: understanding the difference between moisturising your hair and oiling your hair. Moisture starts with water. Water-based products hydrate your hair, while oils and butters are sealants that lock in that moisture.

Oils, butters creams and even hair pomades, can act as a barrier to seal moisture in. While oil isn’t inherently bad, it’s not a moisturiser on its own and should always follow a water-based product.

The choice of oil or sealant often depends on your hair’s porosity. Lightweight oils like argan or jojoba work well for low-porosity hair, which can struggle to absorb heavier products. Meanwhile, high-porosity hair often thrives with thicker options like castor oil or shea butter. It’s not about one being better than the other but finding what works for your hair.

If you’re considering incorporating oils and pomades, use it sparingly and always ensure your hair is moisturised first to avoid buildup.
